On Monday 6 May, Sadler’s Wells will present a screening of new film release Yuli—The Carlos Acosta Story followed by a live Q&A with Acosta himself with film director Icíar Bollaín and scriptwriter Paul Laverty. The film is released in the UK and Ireland on Friday 12 April 2019.

Yuli—the title comes from the nickname given to Acosta by his father—traces Acosta’s life from his childhood in an impoverished Havana to adulthood based on his autobiography, No Way Home: A Cuban Dancer’s Story. The film premièred at the San Sebastian Film Festival in September 2018, where it won the Best Screenplay Award, and has since received five nominations for the Spanish Goya awards, including Best New Actor for Acosta, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The cast includes Carlos Acosta playing himself, Edilson Manuel Olbera playing Acosta as a boy, Keyvin Martinez playing Acosta as a young man and Santiago Alfonso as his father, Pedro.

Acosta Danza was founded by Acosta with the intention of paying tribute to the vibrancy of Cuban culture. The company returns to the UK in autumn, including a visit to Sadler’s Wells in November.
