Dateline: 26th February, 2004 £5m Lottery Money for Young Vic The Young Vic has been awarded £5m from the National Lottery for its rebuilding programme. This means that £10m of the £12.5m needed has now been raised, leaving the theatre to find the shortfall. The theatre was built to last for five years - in 1970! The new build will add new foyers (so no more queuing in the rain), two new studio theatres, a spacious restaurant and bar, new toilets and new dressing rooms. Revamped, the auditorium will feel as intimate as ever, but this time it will be built to last. The £2.5m will be raised from donations and the theatres website suggests a number of ways in which supporters can help, including an innovative "build your own fundraising website" suggestion, as well as the more usual ways of giving gift-aid and sponsoring seats. The Young Vic Theatre is an important part of Londons cultural landscape," says Peter Hewitt, Arts Council England's Chief Executive. "For 34 years it has produced a consistently challenging and inspirational body of work and nurtured the talents of some of our most gifted artists. Arts Council England is delighted to be able to make this award towards the restoration and redevelopment of this much loved building. The theatre will close in time for work to start in July and it is hoped the rebuilding will be completed by summer 2006. The company will continue to present work in other venues. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
