Dateline: 19th May, 2004
Zlata's Diary to Tour Scotland Zlata Filipovic is about to celebrate her 11th birthday when she starts her diary in 1991. She is 13 when she completes it in 1993. Zlata lives in Sarajevo and is a typical bubbly girl; phoning friends, arranging "sleepovers", watching MTV, going out for pizza. All this comes to an abrupt end in early 1992 as the vicious war in the Balkans finally explodes and Sarajevo is put under siege. With her own remarkable blend of humour and horror, Zlata's deep humanity speaks directly to people of all ages. Her powerful testimony demonstrates the importance of bearing witness to events around us, poignantly revealing how aware of the need for peace a child can be.
Zlata's Diary was picked up by journalists covering the war and was instrumental in getting Zlata and her family out of Sarajevo. The French government and the United Nations, who were trying to bring peace to the region, arranged to fly Zlata and her family to safety in Paris. Zlata is now 23 and is living in Dublin. Adapted and directed by Gerry Mulgrew from the Diary of Zlata Filipovic, the Communicado Productions stage version of Zlata's Diary will tour Scotland from 20th May to19th June. Zlata will visit Scotland during the production and will take part in after show discussions with the director and cast in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Tour Dates
