Creative PartnershipsCreative Partnerships is an new initiative from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). What are Creative Partnerships? ‘Creative Partnerships’ is the working title for a new national strategy offering schoolchildren living in 12-15 locations throughout the country a programme of artistic and creative opportunities, through sustainable partnerships between cultural and creative organisations and schools. How will the children benefit? Each partnership will offer the children and teachers a range of enhanced and sustained opportunities, customised to their needs, so that they can work directly with, and experience the work of artists and of cultural and creative organisations. These opportunities will build on and enrich the entitlement delivered by the national curriculum and out of school hours activities. They will develop the young people’s skills and understanding at every stage from a Key Stage 1 introduction to creativity to post-16 vocational opportunities with local creative organisations. Opportunities will include: visits to theatres, galleries, museums, historic or archaeological sites, TV studios, recording studios, craft workshops; artists-in-residence programmes; continuous professional development for teachers working directly with creatives; showcases for performance and display of young people’s work; and developing talent in a chosen specialised field of creativity. Who makes the partnerships? Local partnerships will be between schools and groups of cultural organisations and creative individuals, eg local theatres, arts centres, galleries, museums, libraries, sites of historic or archaeological interest, architecture centres, cinema, TV companies, radio companies, music venues, cultural entrepreneurs, dance agencies, fashion designers, graphic designers, writers, bands, clubs, concert halls, orchestras, regularly touring visitors such as opera and dance companies, other creative industries; local businesses supporting or engaging in culture; new media organisations; community arts organisations; local authority providers. How will it all work? The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has given the Arts Council £40 million over two years to establish at least 12 Creative Partnerships by March 2004. Extra partnership support should also come from public and private sectors, financially and in kind. Partnerships will be in areas designated as being of educational, socio-economic and cultural deprivation. The partnerships will be designed and established at the local level to meet local needs and infrastructure. This will be within a policy framework developed by ourselves, DCMS and the Department for Education and Employment, in consultation with other interested bodies, eg Re:source, The Film Council, English Heritage and commercial creative industries. Partnerships will be longterm and sustainable. Evaluation will be built in from the start, so that good practice can be shared nationally. |
