2001 Edinburgh Fringe Facts

The Annual Report for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2002 has some interesting facts:

  • In 2001, 873,887 tickets were sold for Fringe performances - an increase of 138,000 tickets on the previous year, a rise of nearly 19%. This is over 70% more than the total number of tickets sold for Wimbledon 2001, for example, and more than double the number of attendances in a season for Edinburgh football clubs Hibernian (Hibs) and Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) put together. Including figures from the Fringe’s free outdoor event, Fringe Sunday on the Meadows, pushes overall attendances to the same level as those expected for this year’s Manchester Commonwealth Games
  • Total ticket income was £6,636,093
  • 20% of ticket sales were made through the website
  • uptake of the lottery-backed 2 for 1 ticket offer on the first two days of the Festival saw local attendances increase by nearly 400%
