GB Breaks Away
The Gilded Balloon has broken the link between itself and the other two "top" Fringe venues, the Assembly and the Pleasance. For a number of years the three venues have cooperated in marketing and ticket selling but this year GB director Karen Koren has decided to link up with the Underbelly. She told the BBC that the Underbelly operation reminded her of how she was fifteen years ago and she wanted to help it develop.

Another factor in her decision, she said, was the fact that she feels that the Assembly and Pleasance are now booking "safe" and established acts, which is not what she considers the Fringe to be about.

The original Gilded Balloon in Cowgate, of course, was destroyed in the fire at the end of last year and now has its headquarters in the Gilded Balloon Teviot, the University Students' Union building in Bristo Square, just along the road from the Plesance Dome and round the corner from the George Square Theatre.

Barshack Attacked
Self-styled "comedy terrorist" Aaron Barshack, who achieved national fame by gatecrashing Prince William's 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle dressed as Osama bin Laden, had the tables turned on him on the Fringe's opening day when a group of comedians from new venue The Pod stormed the stage during his performance on Sunday afternoon.

The Comedy Alliance, as they are now calling themselves, includes stand-up comedians, David Hadingham and Anvil Springstien who today justified their actions by explaining that Barshack was the Colonel Mustard of their clueless comic Cluedo board!
