Michael Starke

Michael Starke - On Tour with Cole

Sheila Connor talks to the former Brookside star

This serious picture belies the personality of the man which is warm and friendly. Best known for the TV soap Brookside in which he played the character of Sinbad for about fifteen years, six years ago he decided that he wasn’t enjoying it any more and "it was time to go and try pastures new", although it seemed to him to have only lasted five years as the time passed so quickly. Now in the character of Moonface Martin, he is on a five month tour with the show Anything Goes……. full of Cole Porter’s glorious music, how could anyone fail to enjoy it, and it seems he is – enormously.

Very much a family man, while working in Brookside he was close to home, and I wondered how he would manage being on the road for so long, but no worries there – his family will be coming down to see him at various venues whenever they can manage it.

For the first time in 21 years Michael has actually managed to work with Lynn, his wife, when they took the roles of Baron Hardup and the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. It seems they had a riotous time in that show too, as Michael says that Lynn "took over and barged me out the way!"

The first show he ever saw was Norman Wisdom in pantomime in Liverpool - ‘many many years ago’ - but it was probably his mother's being a film buff which triggered his interest in acting and the theatre, an ambition ‘ever since I was a kid’, although there was no specific reason and no theatrical background. However, he has started his own theatrical background and actress daughter Jamie did an episode of The Royal last year which proud father was on set to see when she shot her scene. “She was just great!”

He enjoys reading and will take plenty of books with him on tour, and maybe he will also have to time play his acoustic guitar which he used in his first show, about 23 years ago.
