The Playwright's FAQ - Part 1

By Lynne Harvey, writer-in-residence at the Drayton Court Theatre

Q What do I say in rehearsals?

A "How do you like your coffee?" - Usually nothing unless asked. The director is now in charge and in artistic control of your play.

It has to be that way, which is one good reason for getting the best director you can. Never ever agree to a director who is a 'friend' of someone in the cast, is doing it as a favour or thinks he should be at The National and you're just a filler before Trevor Nunn rings him up. You must have a director who sees your play in roughly the same way as you do, and who can handle actors in all states and emotions and diffuse 'situations' - and no production is complete without one of those! A good director is pivotal to a good production: make sure you get the right one.
