Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhal in Proof
(c) Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Inc

Proof - the DVD

Based on the Pulitzer-winning play by David Auburn, Proof is available to own on DVD from 10th July. The intense, powerfully acted and involving drama is brought masterfully to life by an incredible star cast. With a wealth of Academy Awards® and nominations between them, Gwyneth Paltrow (The Talented Mr Ripley), Anthony Hopkins (The Human Stain) and Jake Gyllenhall (Brokeback Mountain), bring an emotional intensity and enthralling passion to a film that never strays far from its theatrical heritage. Be sure to make the perfect addition to your DVD collection when the fantastic Proof arrives on DVD.

Reunited with Director John Madden (Shakespeare In Love), Gwyneth Paltrow picked up a Golden Globe® nomination for her role as Catherine, having appeared in the critically acclaimed West End version of the play. Paltrow plays the complex daughter of Robert (Anthony Hopkins), who sacrifices her youth and education to single-handedly care for her father during the worst of his mental degeneration. After spending years caring for the mathematical genius, she struggles to cope with his death and the overwhelming attention of others who consider her "unstable".

A proof is an undeniable mathematical truth that breaks theories and creates new calculations. When maths student Hal (Jake Gyllenhall) discovers a proof on prime numbers in a notebook belonging to University Professor Robert, it is assumed, contrary to all the evidence pointing to his insanity, that he had one last moment of genius before he died. This proof is the only coherent working amongst 103 notebooks of nonsensical scribblings written throughout his illness. Catherine must defy family and friends to prove that she has inherited her father's genius rather than his madness.

Proof is a film full of contrasts; genius and insanity, trust and suspicion, uncertainty and knowledge, and the result is an utterly compelling experience. A story of logic, passion, trust and love, this emotionally stirring film is brimming with touching and absorbing moments. With extras including a director's commentary, an in-depth insight into the making and origins of the film and never-before-seen deleted scenes, Proof is not to be missed when it is released on DVD on 10th July 2006.
