Courage Calls to Courage: The Suffragist Musical!

On 24 April 2018, I joined others for the unveiling of the first statue of a woman in Parliament Square. Gillian Waring’s distinctive bronze statue is of the political activist for women’s rights Millicent Garrett Fawcett, holding a banner that reads “Courage Calls to Courage Everywhere.”

The play Courage Calls to Courage includes songs from the struggle for the vote alongside dramatic scenes, to give us an account of the fight for women’s suffrage, focusing on Emmeline Pankhurst (Stephanie Stoddart) and Millicent Garrett Fawcett (Heather Prince).

It also gives us a sense of the different approaches these women sometimes took, which reflected disagreements in the wider movement.

The many walk-on characters include John Stuart Mill, George Lansbury and Elizabeth Garrett.

The title takes its name from a speech made by Millicent after the death of the campaigner Emily Wilding Davison while protesting at the Epsom Derby.

This is an entertaining, always lively, well sung celebration of some of the important contributions these women and men made to win a woman’s right to vote.
