Godspell - Production Ideas

At the half

Company hanging around outside, in the auditorium & in the foyer

• drinking
• chatting up girls/boys
• eying up girls/boys
• arguing/fighting
• horseplay
• laughing
• Jesus wanders and watches

At five minutes to go

begin LX1 (slow fade out house; table up to full)
Jesus on-stage

Curtain

Jesus steps onto table - speech using radio mic - loud! - ends speech and watches as:

1. Socrates (in auditorium) speaks loudly to those around him - goes on-stage (surounded by supporters) for the song using DSL stand mic - as he comes on-stage, go LX2 (ADD front of stage to 75%, open white) - at end of song, applause from his supporters (loud and raucous).
2. Thomas Aquinas on-stage to DSR stand mic - Socrates carried by his supporters (still singing but without mic) to table.
3. Martin Luther pushes TA out of the way and takes over the mic - TA, still singing, carried to table.
4. Jesus shakes his head in despair & jumps off the table to stand in shadow USC - LX3 (table to 50%).
5. Da Vinci and Gibbon to mics as ML to table centre. D-V and G turn to confront each other and are lifted onto supporters' shoulders.
6. Nietzsche and Satre to mics - N pushed out of way by Buckminster Fuller
7. At start of Tower of Babble ("So high...") LX4 (EITHER chase lighting each group in turn, OR (better?), all to 25% with individual lanterns flashing - disco feel???)
8. Song ends: fighting breaks out between supporters - lot of noise and movement.
9. Loud note (first note of Prepare Ye - keyboard? trumpet?) - then "Prepare ye" - all freeze - John the Baptist walks from back of house singing - radio mic.
10. All slow turn to watch - growing excitement - start to join in - LX5 (bright) - line across stage for baptism sequence - after baptism each goes to sit behind the table.
11. John turns to audience - LX6 (X-fade: all out, then pin spot - follow? - on him) - speech.
12. In the darkness Jesus moves forward to stand slightly upstage of John- speech ends - LX 7 (X-fade - all to 75%) dialogue (includes handing over of radio mic).
