The Midwich Cuckoos

Ian McShane, head of Drama at Teddington School, has a version of John Wyndham's book The Midwich Cuckoos, which is available for production by schools. He writes:

After a week of phoning around, I managed to find the agent of the late John Wyndham, who eventually granted me permission to adapt his classic novel. At first, I was amazed that it had never been staged before, especially given the success of the film version, Village of the Damned. Of course, it should have been obvious: no professional productions, due to the number of minors involved, no school versions due to the potential gruesomeness of the material. However, as someone weaned on sci-fi, Hammer films and Hitchcock, I jumped at the challenge.

The show was a major success, although fortuitous timing played a major factor here. X-Files fever had set in (Wyndham, let's face it, would be suing the makers, were he still alive, such is his enormous influence), the papers were full of Mandy Allwood and you couldn't turn on the box without seeing adverts for Independence Day. (Our own production, about an alien invasion, even closed on July 4th.) Besides all that, how could this concept not fail to inspire 14-year-olds? It involves children controlling adults, more deaths than you'd get in the average Tarantino film and a year-ten student's idea of the perfect finale - the school blows up. From what I can gather from Wyndham's agent, his family gave it a thumbs up.

The story and script give lots of scope for bits of theatrical sleight-of-hand, and the sight of the twelve sweetest looking blondes in the school staring down the audience is an ice-water-down-the-collar image.

Stage Struck!

A 2 hour musical which centres on a Comprehensive School (Westborough High) where a new drama teacher (Jane Collins) get lumbered with a school play written by the Deputy Head (Dougie) and based on Romeo and Juliet. It has 19 songs plus 3 short reprises. It has been acclaimed by all critics who saw the two runs and has quite a following across the UK - mainly because it is a British Grease- aka Grange Hill. This makes it very enjoyable for audiences. It is very funny - and songs have been used by other companies in Pantos, reviews etc.

The Original Cast CD is available from Dress Circle and the script is published by New Theatre Publications (Tel. 0181 651 4119 Paul Beard - who also issues licences for performance).

Primary/Elementary School Plays

I am a parent at an elementary school in California where I produce a musical each year with the children. We always do a musical revue format, since I end up with a cast of roughly 120 each year. The revue format allows me to cast about 40 speaking parts, and distribute the rest of the children in singing and dancing numbers that function as entreacts. We have 3 original scripts that we've written; comedies, more or less. If anyone is interested in seeing them, I'd be delighted to share...
