I am a playwright, screenwriter and script consultant, as well as a
teacher of theatre and dramatic writing. Resident Playwriting Expert
for software-maker Final Draft and for the Writers Store, as well as
the Co-Chair of the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, I was formerly
the director of drama at The Haverford School (near Philadelphia) and
the Managing Director of the Philadelphia Dramatists Center. I've been
interested in the British theatre scene since being produced by the
Green, an experience I thoroughly enjoyed.
Many of my plays feature young actors or are suitable for performance
at schools or by youth theatres. A few highlights:
- DEAR CHUCK (50-55 minutes, though the length is flexible)
Through a series of scenes and monologues--everything from taking
over the kiddie pool at the local swim club to dealing with a skinhead
classmate--the play's eclectic assortment of teen characters, caught
between being children and adults, search for their "Chuck,"
that elusive moment of knowing who you are.
- GUNPLAY (can be either three one-acts, or an evening-length play)
: POT PLAY, YOU'RE NEXT and PLAY'S END can either stand or their own
or combine to chronicle a day in the life of the Doe family and their
weapons.
- NEWT GINGRICH VISITS A RESIDENTIAL YOUTH FACILITY NOT NEAR OMAHA
(10 minutes)
A pair of teenage youth home residents wait for a photo op with Newt
Gingrich. Finalist for the Actors Theatre of Louisville Heideman Award.
- NOW YOU SEE ME (30-35 minutes)
A play about what happens when young people slip through the cracks,
and what drives them to violence.
- TWISTING CAROL (25-30 minutes)
A one-act slaughter of the Dickens classic. Young Ebenezer Scrooge
dancing with a popsicle stick, a ghost named Bob, another ghost who
thinks his name is Bob and a Tiny Tim who considers himself short
but not tiny.
- WAR OF THE BUTTONS (100 minutes)
The youth of a town on the brink of ruin battle the students of a
local prep school that is gradually buying up their town, all the
while protecting one of their own whose parents have abandoned him.
Freely adapted from the novel by Louis Pergaud.
- THE WHITE PAGES (25 minutes)
A customer takes matter into his own hands when he discovers a used
bookstore is removing the pages from classic books and replacing them
with blank ones.
Details about these and many other plays, including synopses, cast
lists, production histories and excerpts, are available at my web page:
http://www.jondorf.com.
In addition to information about my work (including how to order perusal
copies and secure performance rights), my website also features a page
of monologues for use by actors in the classroom and for auditions,
as well as one of the most comprehensive resource pages for young playwrights
on the internet and information about my script consulting services.
This play, The Night the Floor Fell In, may be suitable
for youth theatres. Playwright John McCabe writes:
The play is in two acts and runs for app.90 minutes.
One set. Two characters - Victor, (early 60's) and Jessica, his wife,
(early 30's).
Set in London - Expensive and stylish Hampstead flat.
The story of the "Dark night of the Soul" in a disintegrating
marriage, it grips from the start and doesn't let go. When Kenneth Haigh
first read this he described it as "Strindberg for the Nineties",
and although at times harrowing, it is laced with many lighter moments.....................
JESSICA : So this is to be my punishment ?
VICTOR : There are no punishments Jessica, no rewards, only consequences.
......................................
JESSICA : I was never unfaithful to you
VICTOR : But you've made a start now, haven't you ? I shall find it
difficult to prevent myself thinking of you now, whenever I go through
a door marked "Members Only" !
