Plays by Mary Krell-Oishi

Contemporary Drama Services in Colorado Springs, Colorado, has recently published my newest book of 25 twenty minute one acts entitled Perspectives. Geared primarily for actors between the ages of 17 and 21, this book has already been met with great critical acclaim from the International Thespian Society Western Regional Director.

It is always difficult to find scripts for young actors that do not focus on drugs, abuse, runaways, and the like. This book, however, focuses on the trials and errors of simply growing up through the perspective of the young person.

I have also written a play for a cast of three women and two men. It takes place in a foyer of a bathroom in the home of a wealthy family at the wedding reception of their children. While the bride and groom never appear, the maid of honor and the guests are the central characters. These people all went to high school together and have reached an age, between 25 - 29, where their lives are in a huge flux from being a kid to being an adult. This bittersweet comedy provides pathos and dramatic moments among the many funnier moments.

Currently available are:

  • Scenes That Happen (ISBN 0-916260-79-8)
  • More Scenes That Happen (ISBN 1-56608-000-2)
  • Perspectives(ISBN 1-56608-030-4)

All available from Contemporary Drama Services/Meriwether Publishing.

Christmas Through 2000 - A Millennium Concert for primary schools

Christmas Through 200 - A Millennium Concert for primary schools has been written by two teachers, Ian Jones and Jane Woodford, with their overworked colleagues in mind. One of the aims of the concert is to help minimise the work of putting on a successful production, achieved by producing a really comprehensive package of materials :-

  • a full script with director's suggestions -
  • separate song sheets which can be easily photocopied
  • a full piano score
  • a simple score in treble clef with guitar chords marked
  • a tape of all the music for the songs and appropriate sound effects to accompany certain scenes which can be used to accompany the whole concert performance if needed
  • taped versions of all the songs to help the learning process.

The concert can be produced at schools where there is no music specialist / piano player, as well as schools with music specialists, because all the music and songs are taped. Many schools performed our first concert, An Historic Christmas, in this way with great success.

Christmas Through 2000 centres around the theme of the Nativity and features related events through the millennium e.g. The Wise Men following the star - Halley's Comet and what it meant to people who saw it at different points in history. The concert covers a range of historical periods and is interspersed with sketches, songs and dance.

Our first concert An Historic Christmas is also available. This is based on the National Curriculum requirements for History and traces the development of Christmas through some of the periods outlined in the National Curriculum document i.e. Early Peoples, Saxons, Vikings, Tudors and Stuarts, Victorians to the present day. Arranging and rehearsing become easier because each year studies certain areas of history, and can be allocated set parts from the concert to work on.

Comments from schools who have performed the concert state -

from an academic point of view the content was well ordered and the children were able to gain sound historical knowledge. Feedback showed this proved to be the case for some of the parents also !

as we have no music specialist we used the tape for the whole performance, we had access to a good music system which enhanced the performance greatly

you achieved the main aims - total participation and enjoyment by all the school, well done

Each concert is available at a very reasonable price from
