Some thoughts from the director Ali Borthwick

Two friends. One decides to see the world, and the other remains at home, for love.
Typically like mates, they end up fighting over the same girl.

At the start of the play they part company, Valentine leaves home to go to see the bright lights of the city, leaving Proteus at home with his love of Julia.

Julia decides to meet up with her love, exchanges rings with Proteus, and, too overcome with love, she departs.

Proteus follows his friend to the city, where he falls for Silvia, Valentine's new sweetheart. Proteus then trades his friendship, his love for Julia and his honour for the love of Silvia. Meanwhile, Julia disguises herself as a man, to be employed by Proteus, to thwart his plans.

Intermingled with the plot are various characters, two servants, Lance and Speed, who comment on the masters' love affairs, various suitors of Silvia, and a group of Outlaws and a dog, which pees, brings wind and eats everything!
