Clorinda Agonistes (Clorinda the Warrior)

Author(s): Shobana Jeyasingh

Shobana Jeyasingh presents this union of opera, dance and film in a new production inspired by Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento.

Clorinda, the Muslim female warrior, battles the crusader Tancredi in ancient Jerusalem. In doing so, she becomes a standard bearer for women standing strong in the face of danger.

The second half comes up to date, catapulting Clorinda into Middle Eastern conflict. The story of Clorinda exposes a world of violence, resilience and love across the boundaries of culture and time.

Monteverdi’s score is paired with Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom’s new music, played live by a string quartet. Both works unite tenor Ed Lyon with conductor Robert Hollingworth of I Fagiolini.
