Hot dawg! It’s theatre with hot dogs in Gosforth!
Published: 11 September 2018
Brought to the region by CaroleW Productions, Nathan and Ida’s Hot Dog Stand sets up in Gosforth Civic Theatre on 24 and 25 October.
Nathan and Ida Hardwerker arrive in America with nothing but a will to succeed and a recipe for a secret sauce to pursue their dream of opening the finest hot dog stand Coney Island has ever seen. What follows is an homage to the 'thirties when European emigrants headed to New York to carve out a new life for themselves, told in a style which captures the spirit of the vaudeville era: a comic story of adventure, determination and romance.
They discover love, dice with danger, tangle with villains and create the hottest hot-dog in town. Will Coney Island learn to love their bun-pups? Will their nemesis, Feltman, get his hands on the secret recipe? Will love conquer all?
And this new to the North East production has a cast of over 25—played by a company of two.
In it, long-time comedy collaborators Ida Berglöw Kenneway and Nathan Peter Grassi showcase their particular brand of irreverent storytelling, even throwing in a little tap dancing into the mix.
CaroleW, Gosforth Civic Kitchen and Nathan and Ida themselves will be serving up a sauce-off. Each will offer their own their own secret sauces for your delectation. Which will be your favourite? Hot dogs will be available before the show with your choice of sauce—but be warned: how will you know the answer without trying all three? Hmm…
“It’s been a year since CaroleW Productions launched,” Carole Wears said, “and I’ve been overwhelmed by the support for my endeavours—what a brilliant region we inhabit!
“It’s exciting to be building on the foundations laid last year. I am delighted to be able to offer workshops to accompany shows once more, thanks to support from Sunday for Sammy, and to extend the theme of ‘A Good Night Out’ to this new season at Gosforth Civic Theatre by offering a culinary edge to our audience’s night out.”
