All Good Things Come to an End
My tenure at Tynewear was, unfortunately, shorter than my time at the Empire. Over a couple of years, I photographed a number of the productions, including an excellent The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and the two Theatre Royal pantos Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk.
My photographs were a regular feature on the walls of the foyer (which, at that time, was what is now Stage 3), but all good things come to an end—but not in the way I would have chosen. The PR asked to see me and told me he’d been approached by another photographer.
“He’s good,” he said. “No better than you, but he is a lot cheaper. If you can match his price…”
But I couldn’t. Because of his day job, he was getting his materials and processing free of charge. It was quite legitimate, quite legal, but I certainly couldn’t match his price. So, sadly, that was me finished.
Still, I’d made reasonable money and learned a lot, so it was time to move on.
And I still had Sunderland Empire!
