Love from Carmen

Author(s): Bizet, script & music rearranged by Paul Morrall, Phil Haines, Cara McInanny and Will Laurence Company: Chickenshed Age recommendation: 11+ years

Don Jose's heart beats for Carmen, while Micaela pines for Don Jose's affection. And then there's Escamillo, who's wrapped up in his love for... himself!

Love from Carmen is set in a not-so-distant future where Carmen, a rebel at her core and a refugee by circumstance, takes centre stage every evening in the Refugee Camp Circus.

Guided by Don Jose, a guard in the occupying army, Carmen and her circus companions become the ideal distraction, preventing rebellion. However, the question remains, can she escape Don Jose's control and guide her fellow camp residents to freedom?

Set against this backdrop, the themes of Bizet's original Carmen are explored for these modern times. Rap dialogue replaces opera recitative, and familiar tunes are presented with newly developed arrangements, offering a modern twist on the melodies many recognize without realizing it.
