Jealousy and rage spiralling out of control: The Winter’s Tale

Derby-based 1623 theatre company is to stage a new adaptation of Shakespeare's The Winter’s Tale by Tracy Young.

It will be co-created by a team of deaf, disabled, LGBTQ+, global majority, neurodivergent and working-class theatre-makers.

The Winter’s Tale will be set in a tough winter in Sicilia Court, a rundown council estate still waiting to be levelled up. High costs and low wages mean cold homes, hungry stomachs and desperate minds. When the king of the estate accuses his wife of cheating, he shames her in public and threatens anyone who dares to challenge him. As jealousy and rage spiral out of control, unthinkable cruelty takes over the estate and everything falls apart.

The Winter’s Tale will première at Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December. It will then transfer to Derby Theatre Studio on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 January 2025. The 8PM performance on Saturday 11 January will be live-streamed on YouTube.
