The Unbinding, a dark tale of witchcraft from Wrong Shoes Theatre Company, comes to Alphabetti on 5 and 6 June as part of a national tour which culminates in a season at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.
The play has been devised from historical accounts of witches from Wiltshire and further afield and explores mob mentality and our insatiable need to punish those who are different.
Deep in the bowels of a small-town church four “deviant” women await their sentence in the shadows. Scared and hungry, they don’t know who they can trust or who will survive.
“By researching and working with historical accounts of witch trials throughout Europe,” said Luke Marquez, Director of Wrong Shoes Theatre Company, “we have created a piece that explores a world where those who dare to stand out from the crowd are treated with hatred and suspicion. What makes this story so powerful is that it could be set in any time period. The story seems as relevant today as it would have done 400 years ago.”
It may, he adds, be uncomfortable watching for some and warns that it contains scenes of a sexual nature, nudity, violence, blood and strong language, and is suitable for age 16+.
Tickets are £7 full price / £5 concession (student, OAP, artist, unwaged) and the show starts at 7:30.
