Nora: A Doll's House

Writer Stef Smith makes her Manchester Royal Exchange debut with her 2019 play Nora: A Doll's House, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s original masterwork.

Directed by Exchange joint artistic director Bryony Shanahan, it opens the theatre’s 2022 programme in March.

Three distinct Noras, played by Jodie McNee, Kirsty Rider and Yusra Warsama, distil 100 years of women’s liberation into a domestic thriller.

Nora Helmer tries hard to be the perfect wife, the perfect mother, the perfect homemaker—but under the veneer, she’s close to cracking.

More than a century after A Doll’s House shocked audiences with its portrayal of female married life, this adaptation explores how tightly bound women still are by social convention.
