A Great Night Out

Cornwall-based theatre-makers WildWorks are organising “A Great Night Out” in Sunderland as part of The Cultural Spring, a one-night only performance at The Point in Holmeside, Sunderland, on Sunday 1 May.

WildWorks react to the landscape in which they are working and interact with the local community, bringing together professional and volunteers artists to create their shows.

A celebration of Sunderland’s past and future, the “Cine-Variety” spectacular will be an evening of theatre, live music, song, dance, film and variety turns, telling stories from Sunderland’s community.

“It will be a spectacular night, one that those present will remember for a long time,” said Emma Horsman, Director of The Cultural Spring. “It will be an evening of time travelling, of telling the story of Sunderland through music, stories, laughter and tears.

“The venue will be transformed into a ‘glittering dream space’ in which people will be entertained by local performers who will celebrate the city’s proud heritage through tales and songs.”

The Cultural Spring focuses on five wards in Sunderland and five in South Tyneside: Castletown, Red House, Southwick, Fulwell and Roker/St Peter's wards (Sunderland), and Biddick Hall and All Saints, Boldon, Cleadon, Whitburn/Marsden and Whiteleas (South Tyneside).

Anyone interested in actually taking part can find out more by attending one of two meetings: at Miss Tina’s (formerly Southwick Library) in Beaumont Street, Sunderland, on Tuesday 5 April or at the Customs House in South Shields on Wednesday 6. Both meetings are from 6 to 7:30PM. Anyone interested in going should email Corrine Kilvington by e-mail at [email protected] or, for further information, call 07960 838434.

WildWorks is looking for:

  • Singers to join the Great Night Out Choir (choir experience would be useful but not essential);
  • Performers to join the Great Night Out performing ensemble;
  • Creative contributors with local jokes and stories or able to share photographs and vintage film footage.

Tickets (£5, including a welcome drink and canapés) are now on sale. Guests are asked to dress for a "Great Night Out", and tickets are available from the Customs House box office in South Shields (0191 454 1234) or from The Point’s box office which is open Monday to Saturday, 11AM to 3PM, and only takes cash.
