After its UK première at the Edinburgh International Festival, Aakash Odedra Company’s new dance work Samsara is to be performed at Birmingham Hippodrome at the end of its tour of England.

Samsara is a collaboration between Aakash Odedra and Hu Shenyuan, “two of the world’s finest exponents of dance from their countries of origin, India and China”. The pair met in Shanghai in 2017 and created Samsara, a “powerful story of cultural exchange and shared philosophy” which draws on thinking and imagery at the heart of Buddhist philosophy.

Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Samsara “traces the steps we take, both forward and backward, in search of our higher selves.”

Odedra said, “it’s an honour to return to the Hippodrome with our new production. As an associate artist, to be able to share my dream project with the city I was born in is a special moment. Of course, every big dream has a silent hand behind it and as the commissioning partner of this venture, Birmingham Hippodrome has helped make my dream into a reality.”

Samsara can be seen at Birmingham Hippodrome on Sunday 23 October.
