Nottinghamshire touring company New Perspectives is to produce its second postcard drama Dare To Look Down!, which will take audiences into the “wild and thrilling world of Alton Towers”.
It follows the company’s Love from Cleethorpes in 2020 which was mailed to 26 countries. A card arrived through letterboxes each day, with audience members piecing together a relationship between two people told over a 30-year correspondence as they travelled from Cleethorpes to Nottingham via New York.
In Dare To Look Down!, six original postcards will propel audiences from the 1800s into the future as each instalment captures a fresh view of the theme park from a different perspective.
New Perspectives artistic director Jack McNamara who has written the cards said, "postcards and theme parks can often suffer the same fate: seen as tacky and unworthy of much cultural attention. Yet both contain multitudes, binding families and memories and travelling you through time and space in garish Technicolor.
“The story of Alton Towers is an extraordinary one and captures the distinct strangeness of British history over the last 100 or so years. As our lives remain locked down, with theatres still largely closed, I feel a stronger-than-ever need to re-enter those vast communal spaces that invoke wonder, terror and the occasional splash of nausea."
The postcards will be mailed from Tuesday 8 June and will arrive twice a week. UK addresses will receive all six postcards over a period of a month. Postcards mailed to overseas addresses may take longer. Anyone can sign up for the postcards at the New Perspectives’ web site.
