Hull Truck has announced that its new Artistic Director is to be Mark Babych.

For ten years he was the Artistic Director of the Octagon Theatre, Bolton where he produced 80 plays over 10 seasons, 47 of which he directed, receiving and being nominated for several Manchester Evening News Theatre awards.

He has been working as a freelance director in theatre, TV and film for the past four years and a regular guest director at leading Drama Schools including LAMDA, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Manchester School of Theatre.

“I’m really thrilled to be joining Hull Truck,” he said. “This is a fantastic opportunity to build on the illustrious history and traditions of this wonderful company and make work that forges deep connections with audiences in Hull, welcomes creativity and collaboration and encourages and nurtures the development of talent and the new generation of writers and artists who will shape the future of our work.”

Geoff Sargieson, Chair of the Hull Truck board, added, “We’re delighted to be welcoming Mark Babych to the Hull Truck team as Artistic Director. We are excited by Mark’s experience and enthusiasm for the company and the region, and we can’t wait to work with him.”

Babych is currently directing Lee Hall’s Cooking with Elvis at Derby Theatre. He will be visiting the theatre in the coming weeks before joining the company permanently on 6th May.
