The sun is shining now and being indoors may seem odd but later in the year, in September and October, Northern Stage offers some lavish dance, when two dance companies present work on the large, main stage.
BalletLORENT will return with the family-friendly retelling of Rapunzel and a newly created show Rapunzel After Dark, especially for adults. Both shows are written by poet Carol Ann Duffy, born in Glasgow and Poet Laureate from 2009–2019, narrated by Lesley Sharp (The Full Monty; Scott and Bailey; Three Girls) and choreographed and directed by Liv Lorent MBE.
Redhaired Rapunzel is trapped in a tower because her hair grows so long, meaning her beauty stays hidden from the outside world. A possessive Witch and her pet Creatures are Rapunzel’s only company until a Prince comes along…
In October, international touring company Aakash Odedra Company, which creates work in a blend of British South Asian dance and other styles, brings Samsara, meaning the wheel of life, inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
Epic, mythological storytelling merges with the personal experience of Aakash Odedra and Chinese dancer Hu Shenyuan, drawing on the dance traditions of their respective countries.
