Birmingham REP is throwing open its doors to give an insight into everything that happens on and off stage at the city’s only producing theatre.

Members of the public will be able to see how a show is created and can witness everything from set building to how wigs and costumes are created.

There will be lots of events running throughout the day for all ages. Recruitment workshops will be held for a UK-wide theatre project taking place in summer 2016; there will be opportunities to try playwriting in the Write Away workshops; and theatre company Filter will get older children creating theatre using sound and music.

The REP’s rich history will be explored in a series of archive talks including the life of REP founder and theatrical pioneer Sir Barry Jackson, innovation in theatre design and how women broke new ground at The REP.

Pakistani playwright, human rights campaigner and director of Pakistan’s leading theatre company Ajoka, Shahid Nadeem will talk about some of his work that he has developed during a two-week residency in Birmingham. There will also be a screening of the National Theatre’s production of his play Dara.

Birmingham REP artistic director Roxana Silbert said, “our open day is a great day out for everyone and offers a chance for those who might be curious as to what goes on in our building in Centenary Square to pop in and take a look. The day will hopefully inspire and open doors and minds to the world of theatre.”

All events are free. Capacity is limited on some of the talks and workshops, so places are being offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The open day takes place from 10AM until 5PM on Saturday 9 April. Further information is available at the Birmingham REP web site.
