Birmingham Opera Company is organising a series of events to accompany its new production of Michael Tippett’s opera The Ice Break.

Directed by Graham Vick, The Ice Break will be performed in an inner-city warehouse with a cast of international soloists, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and a chorus of 150 singing and acting volunteers.

Tippett’s “visionary masterpiece” has been described as a “gripping and emotional story of inter-racial, intergenerational, political and personal identity”.

It will be performed on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 April, and from Tuesday 7 until Thursday 9 April, at the B12 Warehouse, Charles Henry Street, Birmingham.

Alongside the opera, a series of events called Breaking the Ice will encourage discussion around the relationship of art to society.

A symposium will be held on Thursday 9 April from 3 until 6PM, also at the B2 Warehouse. The panel will include playwright David Edgar, conductor Andrew Gourlay, documentary film maker Mischa Scorer and Graham Vick, Birmingham Opera Company’s artistic director. Admission will be free.
