Birmingham REP and the new Library of Birmingham

Birmingham REP reopens on Tuesday 3 September after being closed for two-and-a-half years for re-development.

The REP shut in January 2011 to enable the £188m Library of Birmingham to be built on land next to the theatre.

The REP’s refurbishment has included creating a 300-seat auditorium, The Studio, and an extended public foyer, both of which connect the theatre to the Library of Birmingham.

Much of the work on the public areas has stripped away the various additions made over the past 40 years, enabling Graham Winteringham’s original design to be revealed.

Searcys, the catering company responsible for the Champagne Bar at St Pancras International Station and the private members’ club at the top London’s Gherkin, will operate The REP’s new café bar and Centenary brasserie.

Backstage there is a new set construction workshop; wardrobe, wigs and make-up departments; administration offices; dressing rooms; and two rehearsal rooms.

There are also four apartments for use by visiting directors, designers and performers.

The first show after The REP reopens will be Alan Bennett’s new comedy People which starts a UK tour in Birmingham from Tuesday 3 September until Saturday 21 September.
