Birmingham is to be one of the host cities for FranceDance UK, a festival of contemporary dance featuring “young and exciting artists whose work is relevant to the city”.

The city’s Hippodrome will join forces with Institut francais du Royaume-Uni, DanceXchange and ACE dance and music for the festival which aims to “strengthen Franco-British relationships and encourage cultural collaboration”.

The Hippodrome’s programme producer Chris Sudworth said, “FranceDance brings a range of fantastic dancers and choreographers to Birmingham and the UK for the first time. Birmingham is the biggest dance hub outside London.

“The FranceDance programme has been hand-picked to resonate with our city, combining dynamic and playful hip hop-inspired performances with amazing opportunities for artists and communities to exchange skills and experiences with French counterparts. It will also build new relationships for the future.”

A highlight of the Birmingham programme will be the UK première of Emanuel Gat’s YOOO!!! in Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio on Wednesday and Thursday, 23 and 24 October.

Birmingham Hippodrome, DanceXchange and Theatre National de Chaillot (Paris) have joined forces to offer an exchange opportunity to UK and French artists to research new choreographic ideas and showcase new work.

FranceDance UK will runs from Monday 21 until Friday 25 October. Further details are available at the Birmingham Hippodrome web site.
