Story of black footballer Laurie Cunningham: Getting the Third Degree

Highlight of the drama programme at Northamptonshire venue The Core at Corby Cube in autumn and winter 2019 is Getting the Third Degree, the story of black footballer Laurie Cunningham.

Commissioned by football’s equality and inclusion organisation Kick it Out to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its ongoing battle against racism in football, the play tells how Cunningham became the first millionaire black footballer, the first player of colour to sign for Real Madrid and only the second to win a full England cap. It will be staged in The Lab at Corby on Saturday 26 October.

The line-up also includes trade by debbie tucker green and presented by New Perspectives. It centres on three women living in the Caribbean and how age, background and attitude influence their unique relationships with the island and one another. It plays on Tuesday 8 October.

China Plate and writer and actor Chris Thorpe will collaborate on Status, a “globe-spanning journey of attempted escape, with songs along the way”, on Wednesday 2 October.

Theatre in Black will stage an “innovative combination of new writing, contemporary performance and live looping audio” in Loop which “guides you through the cycle of loneliness and the steps you can take to overcome it”, on Friday 22 November.

New Old Friends will create a new, comic re-telling of Swiss Family Robinson, with four performers delivering Christmas cheer from Friday 6 until Sunday 29 December.
