The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2013 shortlist of ten new plays covers a multitude of themes: youth; sexuality; politics; poverty; family; friendship and love, both reflecting society in Britain today and tackling complex issues of belief and morality outside the western world.
The list was whittled down from more than 1,800 submissions by a dedicated team of readers. Entries for the Bruntwood Prize were received from every corner of the UK—more than a third written by first-time playwrights.
Unique to the Bruntwood Prize is the anonymity of the writers, allowing the play to be judged rather than the playwright. The winners of the £40,000 prize fund will be announced at a ceremony held at Manchester’s Royal Exchange on Friday November 22 when the identity of all ten writers will be revealed.
