An award-winning young director will join Manchester’s Royal Exchange with the support of the BBC Performing Arts Fund, providing £10,000 to fund a year-long Fellowship as part of its national grant scheme.

Bryony Shanahan, a London-based director who graduated in 2008, will be supported to further develop her skills by working within the Theatre’s creative team for the next 12 months.

During her time with the Exchange she will take on the role of assistant director for the Royal Exchange’s 2014 summer show.

Sarah Frankcom, artistic director of the Royal Exchange, said: “We are delighted. The Fellowship will provide Bryony with the space and mentoring she needs to develop her craft within an open, supportive and creatively ambitious environment."

Shanahan graduated from the acclaimed Contemporary Theatre course at East 15 Acting School, Essex five years ago and subsequently set up multi-award winning Snuff Box Theatre with two other graduates. She has returned to East 15 as guest director and was recently short-listed for the inaugural Royal Exchange Hodgkiss Award for new directors.
