Birmingham REP has announced that Angela Maxwell has taken over as chair of the board of directors, succeeding Ian Squires who has stepped down after eight years in the role.

Angela Maxwell is founder and managing director of Acuwomen, a strategic business consultancy.

She was commercial director and acting chief executive of Sheffield Theatres from 1991-1995.

She is the first woman to chair the board of directors in the REP’s 100-year history.

Speaking about the appointment, Angela Maxwell said, “I’m honoured to be appointed chair of Birmingham REP at such an exciting time in the theatre’s history.

“It will be a genuine privilege as well as a personal pleasure to work with the team at The REP as we build on its strengths and the hard work and imagination of all those who have been a part of its rich past.”

Stuart Rogers, the REP’s executive director, paid tribute to Ian Squires.

“During his eight years as chairman, Ian has guided the theatre brilliantly through one of the most exciting periods in its long history, culminating in our centenary celebrations and the full refurbishment of the theatre.

“He leaves the theatre in the best possible condition, physically, financially and artistically.”
