Buxton gears up for summer festivals

Three summer festivals and the annual visit of Shakespeare's Globe are highlights of the next six months at Buxton Opera House.

The international opera festival will be held from 5 until 21 July while the Derbyshire town's puppet festival will take place from 22 until 27 July.

The 20th international Gilbert and Sullivan Festival featuring 53 shows starts on 27 July and runs until 17 August.

This year Shakespeare's Globe will be taking King Lear to the Pavilion Gardens next to the Opera House on the weekend of 29 and 30 June, and The Taming of the Shrew on 3 and 4 August.

Drama on the Opera House stage includes Middle Ground Theatre Company's stage adaptation of Ellis Peters's Cadfael: The Virgin in the Ice from 7 until 11 May; Sell a Door's presentation of George Orwell's 1984 on 3 June; Birmingham Stage Company's Horrible Histories featuring tales of Terrible Tudors and Vile Victorians from 5 until 9 June; Ian Dickens Productions tour of Emlyn Williams's A Murder Has Been Arranged from 29 until 31 August; and the return of Buddy—The Buddy Holly Story from 9 until 14 September.
