The Newcastle Journal Culture Awards 2017, held this year in association with Northumberland County Council, seeks nominations for the best cultural performances and achievements in the North East throughout 2016.
Nominations are invited in the following categories:

Visual Artist of the Year: This nomination could be for one particular piece of an individual’s work or an exhibition/showcase of their talents.

Performance of the Year: This award is for a group or company working in dance, music, theatre or comedy productions.

Performing Artist of the Year: This award recognises a group or individual performer who has stood out during 2016: actors, dancers, musicians, singers, spoken word artists and comedians. Nominations could be for one stand-out performance or for a collection of performances throughout the year.

Newcomer of the Year: This award is to recognise any North East-based writer, artist, performer or visual artist who has exhibited, performed or been brought to the public’s attention for the first time during 2016.

Writer of the Year: This award recognises an author, playwright, screenwriter or poet who has had some outstanding work published or performed during 2016.

North East Museum of the Year Award: This award recognises innovative and excellent interpretation in a project developed by an accredited North East museum or gallery in 2016. In particular, judges will be looking for projects that reveal collections in a new light and inspire and delight visitors.

Best Arts and Business: This award is to recognise an outstanding business / arts partnership which has demonstrated an innovative way of working together to achieve respective goals.

Arts Council Award: Arts Council England are looking for nominations for an arts or cultural event or piece of work that has been particularly inspiring this year.

Best Events in Tyneside, Sunderland, Northumberland, Teesside and Durham (and Best Overall Event): This award recognises large and small scale events, festivals and exhibitions within each sub-region. The best overall event will then be selected from the five sub-regional winners.

Special Award for Youth Achievement: This can be for an individual or group and will reward a special achievement in the arts by young people (aged 18 or under) in 2016.

Special Contribution to Arts and Culture: This is an award for someone who has made a significant contribution to arts and culture in the North East over a long period.
Anyone in the region may make a nomination in any category by going to the Culture Awards web site and completing the form.
The Journal Culture Awards 2017 will take place on 11 May at Hexham Abbey, the first time in its 11-year history that the event has been staged in Northumberland.
