Bertie Carvel will lead the cast of Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape as Yank, a labourer who revels in his status as the strongest stoker on a transatlantic ocean liner, when it is revived by The Old Vic in a production directed by Richard Jones.

Carvel recently starred in the BBC adaptation of Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell as the first of those title characters and is most famous on stage for creating the role of Mrs Trunchbull in the Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin musical of Roald Dahl's Matilda.

The production will open on 29 October with previews from 17 October on the theatre's original proscenium stage layout, transformed back from its recent in-the-round configuration.
