Children’s theatre festival takes off this month

The TakeOff Festival of Children’s Theatre returns to the North East this month, featuring 10 shows and 70 performances in 22 venues for children from 6 months to 10+ years. There will be performances in Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Carlisle, Crook, Darlington, Durham, Ferryhill, Newton Aycliffe, Pelton, Peterlee, Shilbottle, Shildon, Stockton, Stanley and Washington.

The ten shows are:

  • We Dance Wee Groove
    (6 months to 5 years)

  • Neverland
    (1 to 3 years)

  • Breaking the Ice
    (2 to 5 years)

  • Molly's Marvellous Moustache
    (3 to 7 years)

  • In a Nutshell
    (3 to 7 years)

  • Mavis Sparkle
    (4+ years)

  • The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
    (5 to 10 years)

  • Fairytales Gone Bad: Zombie-rella / Blood-red Hood
    (6+ years)

  • Spirits of the Sea
    (6 to 10 years)

  • The Mysterious Vanishment of Pobby and Dingan
    (9+ years)

The Festival concludes with the TakeOff Family Day on Saturday 22 October which includes street theatre, music sessions, storytelling, face-painting, art installations, arts and crafts activities and much more.

Over 15 shows for children of all ages will run throughout the day at venues in and around Durham city centre including a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Durham Town Hall. Complete with cakes and treats this interactive story-telling tea party will feature some much-loved characters from Wonderland so audiences should be prepared for games, dancing… and lobsters!

Miranda Thain, Creative Producer at Darlington-based Theatre Hullabaloo which organises the Festival, said, “we are very excited to be bringing some of the best theatre for children and young people to venues and schools in the region. TakeOff Festival is now in its 29 year and we are incredibly proud of how it has grown to become England’s leading festival of theatre for young audiences.”
