“Haunting insight”: Our Lady of Kibeho

Northampton’s Royal and Derngate is looking for local people to form a new acting company to take part alongside the professional cast in a Made in Northampton production, Katori Hall’s Our Lady of Kibeho.

The play outlines how, in 1981 at Kibeho College in Rwanda, a young girl claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary who spoke to her of a coming genocide. She was ignored by her friends and scolded by her school but then other students saw the vision. Our Lady of Kibeho presents a “haunting insight into the true events that captured the world’s attention”.

Royal and Derngate is looking to appoint a black cast to represent members of the Rwandan community. This ensemble will be involved as characters in the play and, although not having speaking roles, may be expected to sing and to move as a group. No previous drama, dance or singing experience is required.

Auditions will take place at the theatre on Thursday 18 October. Registration forms can be downloaded from the Royal and Derngate web site. For more information, contact Erica Martin on 01604 655732 or e-mail [email protected].

Our Lady of Kibeho will run on the Royal stage from Saturday 12 January until Saturday 2 February.
