Millions of pounds will have to be spent to make Leicester’s Curve theatre safe after a chunk of metal came loose from the front of the building in May 2024.
A panel on the exterior of the venue came loose and fell into Orton Square. The city council which owns the building put up a cordon around Curve and said a number of the original fixings would have to be replaced. The work may take until autumn 2025.
Curve opened in 2008 and cost £61 million. Its chief executive Chris Stafford told Leicestershire Live, “restrictions remain in place around the perimeter of Curve with the addition of new walkways having been installed to ensure that people can now access and move across Orton Square.
"No completion date has been confirmed. However, we continue to work closely on this matter with our landlords Leicester city council. None of these measures has impacted our ability to operate as normal.”
A city council spokesman added, “work will now take place to ensure the secure fixing of all of the remaining louvres. Obviously the safety of everyone visiting Curve and Orton Square is paramount, and the cordon will need to stay in place throughout this period.
“None of the measures has impacted Curve's ability to operate as normal and we’re working with the theatre while this important work is carried out.”
Pedestrians were said to have had a lucky escape when the metal fell to the pavement, narrowly missing a man who was walking by.
