The Cultural Spring, a three-year project which operates in ten local authority wards in Sunderland and South Tyneside and aims to get more people in the catchment area to experience and be inspired by arts and culture, has won a Leading Culture Destinations Award.

The LCD Awards are international, focus on museums and celebrate the best exhibition programming, the best museum architecture and the best digital, dining and shopping experiences globally. They also recognise institutions which have “contributed most to the developing sphere of urban governance by influence and persuasion.”

There were 42 nominees across 15 categories and only six were UK-based. The Cultural Spring won the Best Cultural Activation Award for its work in ten local authority wards, some which are the most deprived in Sunderland and South Tyneside.

The Cultural Spring is a partnership led by Sunderland University, the Customs House in South Shields and Sunderland’s Music, Arts and Culture (MAC) Trust, and supported by Arts Council England.
