Angela's Ashes A Musical

A musical based on the Pulitzer Prize award-winning autobiography Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt is to be staged in the city where the story originated.

Uncontained Arts, the University of Derby's graduate theatre company which is based at Derby Theatre, staged the world première of Angela's Ashes A Musical last year.

It received praise and support from McCourt's close family members including his widow Ellen and young brother Alphie as well as from the Frank McCourt Museum.

Now Uncontained Arts will perform the musical at the Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick in the summer.

Adam Howell, composer and lyricist for Angela's Ashes A Musical, said, "The company is thrilled to be taking the show to the Lime Tree Theatre as it has given us another chance to revisit and develop the piece further.

"Taking the show to Limerick is an honour but also slightly eerie as we'll be telling the story of Angela's Ashes in the city where all our characters and scenes are based.

"The production also coincides with the anniversary of Frank McCourt's death which I think will give it even more significance.

"We're very grateful and glad to have been given this opportunity and for the support which we've received from the University of Derby to make this happen."

Gillian Fenton, marketing and box-office manager at Lime Tree Theatre, added, "The Lime Tree Theatre is a new, 510-seat venue in Limerick City.

"We're delighted to offer Angela's Ashes A Musical to our patrons. There's great excitement already in the city.

"Angela's Ashes is something incredibly close to the hearts of the people of Limerick. It's a pleasure to work so closely with everyone at Uncontained Arts and we look forward to July when all the cast and crew will move in here for a week."

Angela's Ashes A Musical will run at the Lime Tree Theatre from Wednesday until Saturday, 17 until 20 July.
