Preview performances of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd—the Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Derby Theatre have been cancelled because of an “unexpected mechanical problem with the theatre’s revolve”.

The theatre said it needed extra time before it could open the show which is a co-production with Mercury Theatre Colchester.

Sarah Brigham, chief executive and artistic director of Derby Theatre, said, “we’ve unfortunately had to postpone the opening preview performances on Friday 30 September, Saturday 1 October and Monday 3 October.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but the show is looking fantastic and we’re looking forward to a great show, which will now have its first preview on Tuesday 11 October.”

Sweeney Todd runs at Derby Theatre until Saturday 22 October. It transfers to the Mercury Theatre from Wednesday 26 October until Saturday 12 November.
