Derby’s creative centre Déda has introduced a policy of letting audiences decide what they think a show is worth after it has finished.

Déda’s “pay what you decide” scheme coincides with its summer season which has performances ranging from family theatre shows to contemporary dance.

Audiences at the Chapel Street venue can book tickets in advance but will voluntarily pay an amount of their choice after the show based on their experience and what they can afford.

Déda creative producer Manya Benenson explained, “we have a reputation for offering a high-quality and diverse range of new and innovative performances in our intimate theatre space. Although we have a loyal audience base, we want to encourage new people to experience shows and the unique offering at Déda.”

Pay what you decide will be available for performances including Handful of Nothing on Thursday 9 May which tackles issues about dealing with challenges and uncertainty through spoken text, contemporary dance and puppetry; Bird, a contemporary Kathak dance performance portraying the uncertainties and social stigma faced by domestic violence survivors, on Thursday 6 June; and dance artist Emilyn Claid’s performance of Untitled on Friday 21 June “which explores queering and ageing with dark humour”.

The full programme is available at the Déda web site.
