Lauren Nicole Whitter is inviting black British females to a free workshop in Derby at which they will be able to create their own piece of writing or short performance.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday 15 January 2020 from 6 until 8PM at the Maypole Theatre and Cafe Bar, Brook Street.

Those taking part will be able to share their story in front of an audience before Whitter’s scratch performance of Othello’s Sister, being developed with 1623 theatre company, on Wednesday 22 January. However, sharing stories at the performance is not obligatory.

Whitter, from Long Eaton, said, “I'm so excited to meet black British women in Derby who want to express themselves.

“This could be through telling a story, writing a poem or speech, performing a scene, singing a song or any other creative way. We have so many untold stories to tell.

“And it's great to try out Othello's Sister in the city where it all began—from a conversation at the Departure Lounge Festival at Derby Theatre a few years ago.”

Othello’s Sister, a contemporary response to Shakespeare's Othello, features Sherronlynetta, Othello's sister, who has always been in the shadow of her brother.

Donna Briscoe-Greene, artistic director of the Maypole Theatre and Cafe Bar, commented, “to say I'm excited by Lauren's workshop and scratch show is an understatement—this will be the first time we’ve welcomed a solo black British female artist to workshop and perform at the Maypole Theatre.

“We gain so much more confidence among our peers. I can't wait to see what stories emerge from the workshop and to experience the scratch of Othello's Sister.”
