Journey's End

The Octagon Theatre in Bolton will open its new 2014–2015 Season with Journey’s End by RC Sherriff, directed by David Thacker.

Programmed to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the cast of began rehearsals on August 4—the date that Britain declared war on Germany 100 years ago.

Based on Sherriff’s own experience of the First World War, Journey’s End is written with the authenticity and compassion of a soldier who was intimately acquainted with the nightmare of life in the trenches, and the extraordinary courage of those who fought there.

Thacker commented: “We open the season with two plays to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War: Journey’s End, followed by Early One Morning by Les Smith.

"These two plays will be particularly powerful. I feel that they will be a fitting tribute to the young soldiers from Bolton and the north west, who fought and lost their lives during the War.

"Both plays will be performed in the Octagon’s intimate in-the-round auditorium and Journey’s End will be set in the trenches, an intense experience for audiences that we hope they will find incredibly moving.”
