Thousands of people will descend on the Derbyshire town of Buxton over the next month for two unique festivals.

Recognised internationally, Buxton Festival is one of the few to specialise in producing rarely-performed operas by major composers. These form the core of the programme alongside a number of guest productions, all of which are presented in Buxton Opera House.

Opera performances include Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and a concert performance of Charpentier’s Louise.

Buxton Festival runs from Friday 10 until Sunday 26 July. Further details are available at the Buxton Festival web site.

Buxton Festival Fringe is one of the largest open-access arts festivals in the country. It began in 1980 to run concurrently with Buxton Festival.

Many companies use the Fringe as a preview before taking their shows to Edinburgh.

Fringe chair Keith Savage said that nearly 600 performances will enliven the town in 2015: “the Fringe reaches out and embraces people making all sorts of artistic endeavour available to all.”

Full details of the Fringe, which runs from Wednesday 8 until Sunday 26 July, are available at the Fringe web site.
