Derby is to mark its 10th anniversary as a city of sanctuary with a festival “celebrating the artistic talents of sanctuary seekers from across the world”.
As part of national Refugee Week, Derby’s Museum of Making will host Hello Derby… A Festival of Welcome which will feature a range of activities and allow visitors to meet people seeking sanctuary.
Derby-based theatre company Maison Foo will have on show its theatre set from its A Seat at Our Table multi-sensory installation “that challenges old thinking patterns and creates a new narrative for people seeking sanctuary in the UK”.
Upbeat Communities from Central America will offer traditional Central American dance and cultural presentations.
Dan Webber, Derby Museums events programmer, said, “we’re thrilled to be co-producing Hello Derby with the Derby City of Sanctuary Network. Derby Museums has always strived to produce events and exhibitions which truly reflect the communities of Derby and Derbyshire and create a sense of welcome and inclusion for everyone who steps through the doors.”
Andrew Jackson, chair of Derby City of Sanctuary, added, “it’s amazing to be able to celebrate the work that’s been carried out over the past 10 years to make Derby a place of welcome for the many people who’ve sought sanctuary in our city. Charities, education providers, cultural organisations, faith communities and businesses have united to ensure that those fleeing war and persecution can call Derby home.”
The festival will be held on Saturday 24 June from 11AM until 3PM. Further information is available at the Derby Museums web site.
