Battles, duels, fist fights and gun fights. Ever wondered how actors can be so violent (mainly) without harm?

Now’s the chance to hear how from an expert. Terry King, one of Britain’s pre-eminent practitioners, will be telling what really happens in the opening talk of the Society for Theatre Research lecture programme on Tuesday 13 October in central London.

Thrilling the audience with physical combat but avoiding injury isn’t just up to the actors. It calls for the skill of the fight director to choreograph the violence and train them. It is his or her knowledge and creativity that makes its safely so effective.

Terry King has worked as a fight director at all the major theatre companies in Britain with extensive credits for productions with the RSC and National Theatre. Tackling everything from the classical repertoire to soap opera, he has worked on numerous operas and West End musicals and in film and television.

You can hear him talk about how stage fights are put together, participate in some simple demonstrations and ask questions or just observe.

It is open to all, free and takes place at 7:30PM at the Swedenburg Hall a couple of minutes from Holborn underground.

For those who cannot attend in person, the event will be streamed live over the web.
